LAMP Words for Life® is a full-featured Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) app developed by PRC-Saltillo. It is based on the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP™) therapeutic approach, which uses neurological and motor learning principles to address the communication needs of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.
The core principle of the app is a consistent motor pattern for each word, which promotes automaticity and language development similar to verbal speech. The app uses the Unity® language system and is a symbol-based system with paired text to support literacy development.
It features a robust vocabulary of over 4,000 core words and is structured with three developmentally progressive vocabulary levels to support users from beginning communicators to those with advanced language skills:
- 1-Hit: Features a core set of 84 early words that speak immediately upon selection.
- Transition: Includes about 200 frequently occurring words with an introduction to verb tensing, often requiring two key selections.
- Full: Provides access to thousands of words, typically requiring three key selections or less, offering a robust vocabulary and full grammar capabilities.
Key features include Vocabulary Builder™ to temporarily limit visible words for teaching without changing the motor plan, and Word Finder™ to help users and communication partners locate words. The app is available for iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, Mac) and as a language system on dedicated PRC-Saltillo devices.
