Lifespan (now Brown University Health)

Lifespan, now doing business as Brown University Health, is Rhode Island's first and largest health system. It is a comprehensive, nonprofit academic healthcare system and the state's largest private employer. The system was founded in 1994 by Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital and has since expanded to include several other major hospitals and service providers across the region. In October 2024, the organization officially rebranded to Brown University Health following an expanded affiliation agreement with Brown University. This strategic partnership involves a $150 million investment from Brown University over seven years to strengthen clinical care, medical education, and biomedical research. The system serves as a primary teaching and research site for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, hosting hundreds of clinical trials and receiving significant federal research funding.
